Congratulations to the KCI Swim Team who swam their hearts out at OFSAA the last few days. The girls did very well, making the final swims in several events.

Meaghan Quanz was 29th in the 200 Free,
Shannon Craig was 14th in the 50 Free and
Hunter Le Truong-Nguyen was 10th in the 100 Free and 11th in the 100 IM.

Remember that's All Ontario - so please congratulate them when you see them.
Furthermore, kudos go out to Shannon Craig who was the top Senior Girl at CWOSSA this year. Great job, KCI Swim Team.We'll see you all out next year! Swim on!!

Local Youth Bring Attention to the Problem of Youth Homelessness in KW...

Students increasing public awareness of youth homelessness issues through two rallies and an overnight camp out in Waterloo Public Square February 26-27, 2010.

On February 26, 2010 students from the WRDSB and WCDSB will come together to face the issue of youth homelessness in the Kitchener-Waterloo region, in an event called Strip The Streets, a campaign inspired by Free the Children.

The event will start with a rally at 4:30pm at Kitchener City Hall. Guest speakers will include dignitaries such as Mayor Zehr, Mr.Peter Braid (MP), Mr. Harold Albrecht (MP), representatives from ROOF, Argus, and Safe Haven, as well as high school students. There they will be speaking on the issues of youth homelessness in our community. Following the rally, students and any community members who wish to join, will march north along King St to Uptown Waterloo, finishing at Waterloo Public Square

The students will be holding banners and playing drums to draw the attention of drivers and pedestrians alike to the problem of youth experiencing homelessness.

When the rally participants reach Waterloo, they will be given a meal at Church of the Holy Saviour. The meal will be similar to one provided by the outreach program "Out of the Cold". This will allow the participants to further understand what these youth face on a regular basis. Following the meal, there will be a campout at Waterloo Public Square. The youth will spend the night outside in the cold to further understand the hardship that countless youth who experience homelessness face. During the night (9-11pm), participating students will engage in Strip the Streets Stories, a time of discussion and reflection with youth volunteers from different homelessness organizations. These story ‘circles’ will enable our youth to understand youth experiencing homelessness more profoundly, and will hopefully encourage them to feel the desire to continue advocating for this issue.

The following day (February, 27th), the high school campers will walk to a church for another “Out of the Cold” type meal. Another rally will take place at Waterloo Public Square at 11am, with more guest speakers including Mayor Halloran. The campout will end mid-afternoon. The general public is encouraged to participate in the two public rallies to advocate for the issue of homelessness within our region, however only high school students are allowed to stay overnight.

The event is being supported by Grand River Transit, who is providing free transportation to and from the event for all high school participants.

This event is being led by the Free the Children groups at Forest Heights and Cameron Heights. Both schools will be hosting a display case event in their foyer for the week leading up to Strip the Streets. On February 19th at 12:30pm, FHCI will be hosting an assembly to raise awareness about the issue, the Strip the Streets event itself, and events leading up to the event. On Monday, February 22nd many students from Forest Heights and Cameron Heights will go to the Argus Shelter to see first-hand the services that are provided for youth experiencing homelessness.

Donations will be collected during the event. There will be a large bin provided by Waste Management located at Waterloo Public Square to collect items needed (see attachment). There will also be students collecting money at the time of the event as well. Cheques can be made out to Forest Heights -Strip the Streets. The goods and money collected will be given to various organizations that focus on youth homelessness in the Kitchener-Waterloo region such as ROOF (Reaching Our Outdoor Friends), Safe Haven, the Argus Residence for Young People and SHOW (Supportive Housing of Waterloo). We strongly encourage donations and ask you to please come out and support our cause.

All high school students in the region are welcome to participate in this event. At this point we have ten high schools committed. The WRDSB and WCDSB are fully behind this event. We ask all students interested to contact an administrator in their school to get a permission form. It is not too late to participate.

Curling Win

Congratulations to the Senior Girls Curling team who have won the right to go to CWOSSA. Great plays by all players - Margot Flemming, Kerilynn Mathers, Michelle Borg, Sarah Muktiyar and Eliana Rosenblum created their win over JHSS to be WCSSA Finalists and their success in beating Brantford won them the wild card game.

They will be competing in Owen Sound next Tuesday and Wednesday. Wish them luck!

Are you going off to university or college this fall in a retail, business or marketing program? Do you presently work in the retail industry? Then you are eligible for the Canadaian Retail Institute scholarship. Applications are due April 1. Chaeck out the scholarship board.

Interested in a Marine and Environmental Program. Try Ocean Educations where you can attend Lester B Pearson School in B.C. either in July or August and earn a Grade 12 Environmental Science credit. Youcan also get your SCUBA certification. What a great chance to combine the two. Check out the exchange board for more info.

Heading off to college this fall. Well, the Garfield Weston Award applications are now in. Check out the scholarship board for application details. Everyone should consider applying for these opportunities to help offset your financial bursden.

How To Add or Change an Announcement

If you're a teacher and you want to add information to your own posts, please see Ms. Snyder to get added to the list of administrators.

1. In the top right hand corner, it says "sign in". Click on that, then put in your e-mail address and password.

2. Go to View Blog
3. Scroll down the list of posts to the one you're interested in altering. Click it.
4. At the bottom of the box around the information, there's a little pencil icon. Click it.

OR you can go to Edit Posts, scroll down the list of posts and click Edit on the one you want.

HINT - It's easier to add and change stuff in Compose mode (at the top of the box), BUT if you're cutting from elsewhere and pasting into the post box, use Edit HTML mode or else it'll all get messed up. Then switch to Compose mode to make sure it looks the way you want it to.

To change the text: just type.

To change the picture: First open another internet page and google images to find a picture you want. Right click on the picture and hit "save as". Remember what it saves as! OR use your own photo from your hard drive or memory stick. Then come back here and click on the little picture icon to the right of "Link". Hit "browse" then find your saved photo name and click on it. Click on "OK". Once it's in the box here, you can right click on the photo to move it left, right, or center and to change the size. I typically go with Left and Small.

To add a link to another site on-line: Open another internet page and go to the site (if you don't have the URL handy). Copy the URL at the very top of the page. Come back here to your post box. Type the words that you want the link to show up on. Highlight them by running your mouse over them while holding down the left click button. Click on "Link" at the top of the box, and paste in the link where it says "Web address". Click on "OK".

To add a post: If you don't have a post already for your team or club or whatever, look at the top right hand corner of the page, and click on "new post". Add a title and information.

HINT on LABELS - The Label (at the bottom of the box) is what makes the post show up at the side. If you're adding a club, use the label for your club (whatever you call it), but also add CLUB as a label (separated with a comma and space) so it's added to the list of clubs at KCI. Same goes for sports, arts and entertainment, etc. You can click on "show all" to see all the choices of labels so far to make sure you're not duplicating something that's there already but under a slightly different name and to make sure you added your post everywhere it belongs.

To get your post on the home page: If you have some good news, and you want it to show up on the home page, add a post, and use the labels: Applause Applause, and Home, as well as whatever sport or club it's about. After a few day, go in to edit it and delete the Home label because we'll get tired of looking at it. It'll stay in the other places though. So at the end of the year, if someone clicks on Applause Applause - which is first on purpose, they'll get all the amazing stuff we did all year! Cool, eh?

5. Click on "Publish Post".

Listen up, KCI! Every year KCI students win awards at our county’s Secondary School Student Writing Contest. So those of you who love WRITING ARE INVITED TO SUBMIT YOUR WORK to the Waterloo County High School English Awards for this year’s Writing Contest. You can submit your work in the following categories: short stories, poetry, informal prose, children’s literature, illustrated children’s books and one-act play scripts. So, if you like creative writing, here’s your chance to show off your talent, get recognition and maybe an award!

You can submit your work in as many categories as you’d like, but no more than two entries in each category. There will be an in-school contest first, and then two winning in-school entries in each category will enter the K-W county-wide Writing Contest in late March.

See your English teacher for more detailed information about the submission criteria and for submission sheets. Remember: the deadline for submission of your entries to your English teacher is March 4, 2010. And in case that you don’t have English this semester, you can see Ms. Cengic in room 263 or in the English office.

We had several winners in this contest. Remember, the deadline for submissions is March 4.

Minds in Motion Awards

The Minds In Motion awards were established to help with the costs of tuition, specialized software, tutors, note takers and other essential accommodations that are needed so that students with learning disabilities can achieve their potential at school.

Note: Applications must be received on or before April 17, 2010 to be considered for funding for the 2010 – 2011 academic year.

The Justin Eves Foundation supports the Minds in Motion Awards Program. It is the sole Foundation in Canada providing financial assistance for students with learning disabilities.Students may apply for either a scholarship or a bursary to pursue a post secondary education at a college or university. To be eligible for a Minds in Motion award, a student must:

* have a documented learning disability
* be an Ontario resident
* attend a high school in Ontario
* be applying to their first university or college degree/diploma

A scholarship of up to $3000 may be awarded annually. Bursaries are awarded for the first two years of college or university. In choosing recipients, the committee considers the followings:
* community/school involvement
* academic performance
* post secondary courses chosen
* financial need (bursary only)
* efforts made to overcome learning difficulties and achieve success

The KCI Boy's Varsity Hockey team would like to thank the students, the girls' hockey team, the staff and parents for supporting them in yesterday's contest at McLaren Arena. They were entertained by a fast skating, hard hitting game that left many on the edge of their seats. No one left disappointed.

After trailing 4-1 at the end of the first period, KCI put on a show and scored 5 unanswered goals in the next 20 minutes to pulll out a 7-6 win over Huron Heights and send them into the first round payoffs against Bluevale Collegiate. The time and location of our next game has yet to be determined.

We will now be collecting during your MSIP period - your collection envelop will be in your MSIP folder - once collected please send a student down with your money and have him/her give it to Sue Usher.

Money this week (and next Friday) will be going to the children's ward at Grand River Hospital.

Money collected on Feb. 26th and Mar 5th will be given to Hogar de cristo ( a Chilean NGO). All money collected will go directly to aid in the purchasing of supplies/materials that they need to help build a nursery. We are hoping to raise awareness at KCI "about the small things people can do to better the world".

March 12 - period E, guitarist Bob Maclean will be performing and persenting a workshop in the auditorium. Bob is considered to be an extraordinary guitarist. He is known throughout Canada and elsewhere as one of the finest Celtic guitarists a person could ever hear. He is especially effective at using alternative tunings for guitar - Drop D, DADGAD etc to infuse a more celtic sound into his music. If you are interested, please bring your starving masses to the auditorium immediately at the start of the period. Seating will be on a first come, first serve basis. Sears Drama Festival

The 64th annual Sears Drama Festival was held last week at St. Benedict's high school. KCI performed the play God by Woody Allen. Though the play is not going on to the next level, we won two awards. David Blake-Dickson won an Award of Merit for acting and Thomas Putman won an Award of Excellence for his acting. Congratulations to all involved.

March 26 Field Training
This will be primarily an outdoor event so dress for the weather. It will take place at the Little Tract Forest and adjacent Green Legacy Tree Nursery. Both are located on Wellington County Road 34 just east of County Road 32 between Guelph and Cambridge. The Little Tract is a diverse forest and the Green Legacy facilities are the largest municipally owned tree nursery in the province - providing over 150,000 free or highly subsidized native trees to Wellington county residents and community groups.

On this day we will be breaking students into four groups and running concurrent hands-on sessions focusing on wildlife and forestry. A third session will involve a tour of the nursery by Green Legacy staff, followed by some good honest volunteer work at the nursery by the students to support the Green Legacy program while at the same time offsetting our transportation emissions to make the day carbon neutral. I'll provide more details as the date approaches. The event will run from 9:15 AM to 2:30 PM. Teams should bring their own lunches.

April 16 Competition Day
The competition this year will be taking place at the Puslinch Community Centre, which is conveniently located south of Guelph in Aberfoyle, very close to highway 401. This facility should be perfect for the competition as it has a large auditorium, an adjacent large meeting room for presentations, and a large common area that can be used to prep the presentations. Outside, there is a woodlot nearby as well as a coldwater stream (Mill Creek) flowing through the property. Lunch will be provided.

WIN WIN WIN ! The KCI Girls Hockey Team played their best game of the season against the 1st place team in their division and WON 2-1 with a majestic performance in goal tending, defense and offense. Goals were scored by Jessica Duke and Christine Ellis assisted by Maggie Alpaugh & Hailey Phillips. Kallie Doak kept the team in the game through all three periods. We are awaiting results of other games to determine a playoff position.

Please excuse the KCI Boy's Varsity Hockey Team Tuesday, Feb. 16 at 1:30 for their game against Bluevale Collegiate at Moses Springer Arena. The bus will leave at 1:45 sharp. Game time will be 3:00 pm. Fan support for this first round of the playoffs would be appreciated. See you there!

The KCI Boy's Varsity Hockey team would like to thank the students, the girls' hockey team, the staff and parents for supporting them in yesterday's contest at McLaren Arena. They were entertained by a fast skating, hard hitting game that left many on the edge of their seats. No one left disappointed.
After trailing 4-1 at the end of the first period, KCI put on a show and scored 5 unanswered goals in the next 20 minutes to pulll out a 7-6 win over Huron Heights and send them into the first round payoffs against Bluevale Collegiate. The time and location of our next game has yet to be determined.
